The Desire for the Journey

We walk the paths in the journey of our artistic lives. It doesn't matter how far a person has gone, or if even if the way has been lost, as long as the passion, the love and the joy are still there we believe that every moment is a step forward. The desire to keep walking is all that matters and all that is required.

Empty Your Cup

We believe in humbling oneself, putting the ego aside, and always keeping an open mind. It does not matter how much a person learns or how much his or her skill has developed, there is always a chance to learn something new even from the most novice seeming.

The teacup is the symbol of Itadaki. The only way to taste the tea of another person is to empty your cup.

The Itadaki Forum is all about cultivating this.

"Bad" Business (KumoriCon Artist Alley)

Postby Chevi on Mon Aug 04, 2008 2:35 pm

I'm kinda reposting this from my LJ, I'm just...so frustrated right now, I'm kinda venting.

On June 29th, I had sent in my table registration for Kumori-Con...

1. I tried to get a table since May-June, since no one had heard about registration opening.

2. Apparently, people were already turning it their forms received at the end of last year's convention. When we got these forms we were told to hold onto them till registration for tables opened. Apparently, not the case.

3. I email the coordinator, then proceed to the forums. Apparently, people are already complaining they've gotten no response from the coordinator through emails.

4. The coordinator for Kumori-Con (who btw, is the same girl who coordinates Sakura-Con's AA) tells the forums a few days after I email her, that she is having trouble receiving emails and that she will contact everyone soon.

5. Days pass, she posts again, saying that the artist alley is full. People rage and complain, saying they were never told when registration opened, and that they don't understand why it's already full. Apparently, there were only 20 tables, and they were all taken. After about 10 people complaining, she says there is a chance she will expand artist alley...and then says, yes, she will expand.

6. More days pass, middle of June already. People still complaining, then finally I get an email from coordinator saying that there is a spot open for me. I get the money and then ask her if she still has it (took me till the 29th to get money) and she says she saved it for me. So I send my money in.

7. It seems like I was the only one emailed, complains are still continuing to poor in, and no one else was even told through an email (no more spots left). The coordinator is also ignoring PMs through the forums, and ignoring notes on Deviantart.

8. July already. People are still getting frustrated. The coordinator has not answered anyone else. Apparently, she is so busy. she's at a convention at least once a month. Made excuses about more email trouble.

9. July 19th, a general Kumori-Con meeting takes place. None of the artists concerned can make it, so none of us can speak on our behalf. Apparently, all they did was give the AA coordinator paperwork to deal with, and I heard nothing of them telling her she needs to do her job. Staff tells us she will contact everyone soon. One staff member also says they may have overbooked. There is a rumor from someone saying she overbooked 12 tables. There is a video of the meeting posted on youtube, 6:40 is where they start talking about artist alley. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cLTU0n73ts They blame it on contracts being handed out without permission. This should not have a been an issue. They could have easily denied contracts. They say it will all be taken care of by the next meeting.

10. Aug. 1st. Sunday, Aug. 3rd is another general meeting. It's in Portland, OR. Still no word from Lori. Or staff. We're still all in the dark. Only less than a month till the convention. My friends who will be going with me have until the 15th to pre-register...and they're waiting on me. If I don't have a table, it's a possibility we may just go to PAX instead. But we're still not sure. According to the contract for AA, cancelling a table 2 months in advance is a full refund (minus $20 for a fee) and 90 days is much less. I hope this is not the case because it wasn't my fault this happened and I get cancelled.

11. Aug. 3rd. Meeting took place. 2 artists went to see what was going on. Coordinator wasn't at the meeting, and staff had nothing further to say about the problem.

This is seriously pissing me off. It costs $80 to try and get a table there, and with only 26 days left to the con, friends waiting to register, and I personally have nothing ready for the con, I'm sitting on my ass waiting on these a-holes to see if I really have one or not.

How important is this con? I know you have money invested. At this time it almost seems like the best option is to pull for a full refund and head to PAX. With this level of miscommunication there's no telling what could go wrong.

Oh yeah, I know exactly how frustrated you were with the AA at Kumoricon. >_<

It was probably the most unorganized and stupid occurrence I've had to deal with to date.

No one liked what happened last year. Though it seems Kumoricon did the smart thing and replaced her, and the new coordinator for the AA at Kumoricon seems much more professional and organized.
